Malaysian electronics exports rebound as the semiconductor cycle turns

Electrical and electronic exports rose 9.4 percent. Penang has been waiting for this for two years.

Electrical and electronic exports rose 9.4 percent year on year, the strongest reading in two years and a clear break from the contraction that had run through most of the period.

The sector is roughly two fifths of total Malaysian exports, so the read-across to the headline trade number and to the broader economy is direct.

Where Malaysia sits in the chain

Predominantly in assembly, test and packaging, the back end of semiconductor manufacturing, concentrated around Penang. That position has advantages and limits.
